Portland West: Youth Building Alternatives (YBA)

outh Building Alternatives is a comprehensive, education program that teaches young adults the skills they need for a healthy and productive future. We offer a dynamic curriculum that challenges students with a multifaceted educational program, including vocational, academic, and life skills components.


Our curriculum includes:
Hands on training in the building trades.
Classroom instruction with opportunities to boost core academic skills, prepare for the G.E.D. exams, and/or pursue options for post-secondary education.
Life skills training in a variety of areas, including health, housing, resume writing and independent living.
Guidance in areas of education, employment, social relations, health, personal issues and access to community resources.
Leadership development emphasizing responsibility and commitment to the community.
Interactive speakers on social issues.

Our Commitment to the Community:
Community involvement is an integral component of Youth Building Alternatives. The renovation and construction students provide is always done in partnership with nonprofit and/or community organizations. In addition, students participate in a variety of volunteer experiences, as well as the design and implement 'of service' learning projects with a focus on rebuilding connections and developing an understanding of social responsibility.

Who is eligible:
Youth Building Alternatives recruits young men and women who:
are 16 to 24 years old
have dropped out of school and/or are on probation
have an interest in pursuing a G.E.D. or preparing for post-secondary education
have an interest in learning about the building construction trades
are able to make a 9 month commitment to the program
meet the low income guidelines
