Portland West: Affordable Housing

Graphic Courtsey of www.webdiner.com
or over 20 years, Portland West has been providing housing for Portland's working families. As the city works to develop a solution to the shortage of affordable housing, neighborhoods are struggling to assist those left in the cold.

Since 1981, Portland West has provided many units of decent, affordable housing in Portland. Through leveraging economic and social resources, our Affordable Housing Program owns and manages 56 units of renovated, high quality, affordable housing units at 12 scattered locations across the city. As part of their vocation curriculum, students from our Youth Building Alternatives Program work on maintenance, renovation and historic preservation of the properties.

The St. Dominic's Project:
The City of Portland Housing Committee chose Portland West and the People's Regional Opportunity Program (PROP) to renovate St. Dominic's Girls School into 12 units of affordable housing. The project maintained the integrity of this landmark while making more housing available to low and moderate-income families. The project was completed in March of 2004; celebrating with a grand opening celebration. We even had women who attended the girls school stop by for a tour of the beautiful new apartments that was once their classrooms!
