Building Community through Active Participation

s a volunteer you will have the opportunity to work with elementary school children, young adults, and families to help them achieve some of their life goals. We need your help in the following programs:

Affordable Housing Community Resource Lab
Youth Building Alternatives Learning Center
 Service Works After School Program
  English language Program

Affordable Housing:
Portland West owns and manages 56 affordable housing units located in Portland's West End and Parkside neighborhoods. Volunteers are needed for basic carpentry, painting and yard work.

Community Resource Lab:
The Community Resource Lab is an evening drop-in center where adults, young and old, and high school students learn to use the computer for writing resumes, job searches, and e-mailing friends and family from afar, and much more. ESL tutoring is also available. Volunteers are needed to provide tutorial help, and take part in conversations with ESL students to help them improve their English. Volunteers are also needed for childcare. Hours of operation are  Monday thrugh Friday, 6:00 - 8:00pm.

Learning Center:
The Learning Center provides Reiche Elementary and King Middle School students in grades 3-7 a safe haven to work on homework, learn computer skills, improve reading skills, and work on cultural enrichment projects. Volunteers are needed to help students with homework, reading, computer skills, and play games. Hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Service Works:
The Service Works program works with public and non-profit organizations to develop community projects through which juvenile offenders can make restitution and learn and practice critical life skills to support positive patterns of behavior. Volunteers are needed to supervise various community projects. Hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 3:00 - 6:00pm and Saturdays 11:00am - 5:00pm.

Youth Building Alternatives:
A comprehensive, transitional, and educational program that works with individuals 16-24 of age who have dropped out of school or been in trouble with the law. This program offers a unique blend of education, counseling, leadership development, and job training skills to reintegrate youth into the community. Volunteers are needed to tutor in basic math, reading, and writing or to help on the construction site. Hours of operation are Monday thru Friday, 8:30am - 2:30pm.
