Portland West: Who We Are

Graphic Courtsey of www.webdiner.com
ortland West is a dynamic community-based organization. It started in 1967 as a grassroots neighborhood advocacy movement to protect the working people of the west end and never stopped moving forward with the community. Today Portland West is a social service agency that serves people all over the greater Portland region. We serve young children, at-risk adolescents, and low-income families. We provide education, counseling, housing, and job training to people looking for a second chance or an extra hand.

Here are just a few of our accomplishments over the past three years:
  • Our students built a house for a low-income family of nine, helped develop the St. Dominic's Girl's School into new family-sized apartments, and are developing 2 single family affordable homes off Washington Avenue.
  • Portland West students who must do restitution for non-violent crimes put in over 8,000 hours of work throughout the greater Portland area.
  •  Our English Language Program for adults has served students from all of the world's continents except Antartica and Australia!
  • Over 11,100 tickets to cultural events were given to low-income families. 375 kids received free school supplies.
  • Over 87% of our alternative education students received their GED, go on to higher education, or enter the work force.
